It hurts me to rate this movie as a 2 stars.
Mulan was, together with Belle, my favorite Disney character growing up. My expectations for this movie were so so sooo high. Although I was aware Muchu wasn’t going to be there and I was expecting some changes, I have to admit that after the first 20mins of the movie I already felt like turning off my TV. I just didn’t do it because of my love for the original story and Disney movies in general.
What made it so sad for me was that MULAN BECAME A BORING CHARACTER. We don’t feel so much empathy for her, since now she is this girl already born with “super power” (her “chi”). WHERE IS OUR CLUMSY MULAN, full of sense of humor and hard working? The new Mulan is so serious, doesn’t talk so much and comes off as standoffish once she is allowed to “show her powers” to the others.
The fact that some ICONIC SCENES from the cartoon - when she cuts of her hair or when she climbs up the pole using her arm strength to prove her worth - did not appear was sooooo disappointing! And lets not even mention the fact that all of our beloved musics from the original movie don’t appear (I tried to be ok with it, but adding to it the fact that some iconic scenes were gone as well made the whole experience so frustrating).
When compared to the live action of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, this doesn’t even feel like a movie produced by Walt Disney Studios.
I would say the only positive thing is the beauty of the scenary and the dresses. I just watched until the end because I hoped my impressions would change throughout the development of the story.
