I loved Leyshon's use of the English language as representing social levels in the 19th century. Mary, who against her will is given away to the vicar's house, does her utmost to be of help there But then things change and she feels that she is being trapped in a situation she cannot control. She is wiling to pay a high price in return for learning how to read and write. The story, which has been written by her, ends as she takes responsibility for her own life as a free person.
