The simplicity of the depiction of the revolution does much to allow for the personal story and character development to occur without unnecessary distraction.
The background conflict remains as such for most of the film providing a canvas for the development of relationships and the demonstration of emotional pain through difficult decisions and unbearable personal tragedy.
The writing and directing assumes a certain level of intelligence and maturity of the audience. By missing out depicting obvious events and journeys it leaves a better paced film that isn't overly long. The film is better because of this.
The acting is superb.

Dull. Formulaic. Disappointing. Very cheesy. Hammed up to the full. Perhaps more aimed at the teen/preteen demographic.
Some will enjoy it and there is nothing wrong with that. Just a little too childish, sans fun, for me.
