Great cast and clever humour in the initial season but some serious flaws with the show, in particular the kind of message it sends out there (in an already patriarchal world)
- The lead character, an Indian doctor struggles to find a suitor and the narrative is that’s because she is very successful. So is Kaling’s point here that women shouldn’t aim to be successful?!
- a new mother gets booed at for breastfeeding in a public space. That wouldn’t ever happen elsewhere in the world (I guess America has its own issues) but even so, shouldn’t the message be to empower women to breastfeed whenever their baby needs to be fed rather than shaming them? This was the lowlight of the show
- Mindy’s fiancé is not supportive of her being a working mum and wants her to be a SAHM despite the fact that she is a better doctor than him, once again, this sends a patriarchal message to society. If anything, Kaling could have normalised SAHDs by having the baby daddy put his career on a hiatus to look after his baby.
- Mindy, an obstetrician herself continues to eat poorly during her pregnancy, no mother, let alone a qualified doctor would ever do that to themselves or their baby.
- By Season 4, it’s almost a soap opera rather than a comedy show but even so the patriarchal tone continues. Don’t think I’ll be watching any further.
