The book wasn't an easy read. However, for me, it was compelling. It could have easily been the lives of members of my family.
It is about the lives of members of two Jewish families in the sewers of a Polish city. As awful as the conditions were, I couldn't put it down for more than a few hours at a time. I am from a Jewish family, and my relatives on both sides emigrated. between the late 1800's and the early 1900's.
It also made me think about others who have been persecuted in various parts to the globe including some of the Rwandans.
The end was a slight surprise to me--in regard to a few of the characters in the book. Although the book is a novel, it reads as though it is nonfiction.
While the subject matter is not easy, I finished reading the book in less than a week. I would like the author to add some annotations about some of the vocabulary and pronunciation of some names and words.
This is the first book to my knowledge that was written that I've read (or at least was completed) during the pandemic, as addressed in the Afterward.
I want to thank the author for writing about such a difficult subject.
