First half hour of the movie felt similar to Shutter Island. Rest of the movie felt like Guardians of the Galaxy.
***Spoilers below***
Since the beginning of the movie dealt so much with mental health and recursive loops, I was initially contemplating the idea of triple metaverses and how [insert obscure Matrix logic here] maybe Neo and Trinity were eventual iterations of the Architect and the Oracle. I had even predicted that Neo / Tom would have to confront his own construction of various multiverses in order to destruct / reconstruct a mentally sane version (or at least pretend to)...
But no - the rest of the movie focuses on Neo (who randomly stops second-guessing his alter ego) pining after his super-married-one-true-love at the risk of all remaining humanity; then, it turns to the plot of his groupies, Bugs Bunny and Morpheus the Metal Pin Toy, rescuing him from a cozy prison with a beautiful view (aka the 'Rapunzel Tower'). The team then rallies to help Neo (again - definitely not Tom on any level) defeat his bully therapist, Count Olaf, with the power of love, rainbows, and a cute robot manta ray. Finally, Trinity - the Matrix Princess - whisks her flightless, respectfully aged man out of danger. Oh yeah, and the whole universe discovered light-hearted humor and strawberries somewhere along the way.
Don't get me wrong, as a millenial woman, I can get onboard with the second half of the movie without the psychological tease of the first. But at least call it 'The Matrix Refurbished,' add a few musical numbers, and leave my beloved Matrix Trilogy to rest in peace. As the wise Matrix Princess warned us all, "This is where my dream ends."
