As a Seo In-Guk fan (I have been a fan since Reply 1997 and will forever list him as one of the most underrated Korean actors) it pains me to give this drama a 3 star rating. Why?
1. Doom (as a character) I believe is the kind of role Seo In-Guk is PERFECT for. The cold eyes, the haughty look, the bad boy persona he does so FLAWLESSLY!! Yes, it was right up his alley, so what went wrong?
— bad writing.
It wounds me to do this juxtaposition but: the reason why Goblin:the lonely and great god is still a very relevant drama even after 6 years, is because we actually saw our supernaturals use their powers FREQUENTLY. The sad pasts were there, and the dramatics were in there as well but that did not dominate the entire show. –and yes, I caught myself comparing the show to Goblin several times while watching it, and it always fell short. Sadly.
— Expectations.
I went into the drama with high expectations because as stated earlier, as a long time fan of Seo In-Guk, hearing the word “doom” made me think WOW! And I was sorely disappointed. Aside the one time in the hospital parking lot where we saw him really being evil(arguably), there was nothing scary about Doom. He was FLUFF from beginning to end and that pissed me off SO MUCH because Seo In-Guk’s potential was utterly wasted in this drama.
— Second leads.
At some point during my watch(about ep.8) I started to look forward to Na Ji Na’s romance with Cha Joo-Ik more than the main leads, and it stayed that way till the end with me sometimes skipping scenes of the main leads in annoyance, to the second leads.
— Casting decisions.
• Goddess/Mother Nature: I didn’t like the goddess. She never sold the story to me. I don’t know if that’s just because of acting, or directing, or writing itself but whenever she spoke I didn’t get any conviction of a deity speaking (again, not like the lady in Red in Goblin did).
• Kevin: I didn’t see the whole point of him. He had a few scenes where he stood there awkwardly, while he was talked over. There was an unnecessary scene where he says he wants to “talk to the Dong-Gyung but the “conversation” was him speaking English while she spoke Korean with neither of them showing ANY indication that they actually understood the other person. I’d like to think it was poor acting but I know it’s bad writing and directing and that’s just disappointing.
This show, I reiterate, had SO MUCH potential and it physically hurts to see it be such an average AVERAGE show. They could have done more. The writing was waaaaay below average so I commend the actors for trying.
