Beautifully filmed and well acted, the first 30-45 minutes are a slow build, and we discover things are not quite right. But this film (and I suppose book) didn't know what it was supposed to be. Cyber attack? Alien invasion? Nature fights back à la that terrible M. Night movie where trees tried to kill humanity for being reckless with the planet? Movie lacks focus and the "explanation"- literally is the last few minutes of the film- is simplistic, lazy, and unrealistic. There were also a few scenes in the middle where the dialogue was cringe and poorly written. Could have been a good story; but overall seemed unfocused and I'm surprised that the book it was based on was so well recieved. It's fine to leave something open ended and open to interpretation, but this story is not good.
