The book it's based off of was written in the 1980s and was based off a premise we were heading towards a society like this. Totally laughable, our society has gone in the opposite direction and it was clearly going that way back then. The themes of the show fits what actually happens under Islamic regimes exponentially more than any western Christian majority society. It doesn't come close to living up to Brave New World or 1984 which actually brought up realistic paths we could go down from those times and have edged ever closer to.
