I was forced to read this horrible book for Honors English class and write a two-page essay on it. This is my review after listening to the audiobook for 4+ painful hours.
The writing is just... to put it gently, bad. I find how Crane writes to be extremely difficult to understand for someone of my reading level.
Even with the context of the setting and the theme, it was still ridiculously boring and hard to understand. And maybe, the fault lies with me, but I had been able to read older books with little trouble. EXCEPT for this one.
Crane writes out the accents. I have *no* idea what they're saying sometimes, and I only can half follow along thanks to an audiobook that DOES understand what they're saying.
And like some other reviewers pointed out, this could even be seen as offensive to actual people who partook in war. My teacher made the explicit point of saying Crane was not a War Veteran.
Maybe, I'm biased and bitter for having to read this for an English assignment. I can say with certainty though that this is hardly a good book, at least by my own standards and opinions. Someone else may enjoy it, leave a good review. Someone else may hate it and leave a scratching review.
It's all opinion.
