To be fair, it's years since I saw this movie, but I remember at the time, despite only being a pre-teen, that it was a bit 'light' and unrealistic, which was worrying as it was the US who would lead the UK and the rest of the world into nuclear war. Having watched the British film, Threads, I was only too aware of the absolute grim reality of nuclear 'war'. That film is utterly scored into my brain. In comparison, The Day After seemed to misunderstand the sheer obliteration that nuclear bombs entailed. Maybe it's the "Hollywood" treatment, but then it seemed worryingly to indicate those pressing hardest for nuclear armament had no clear grasp of the annihilation it would cause.
