Initially thought ‘oh no’ another Netflix series that is going to end up in the air like Marco Polo.
This thankfully comes to a conclusion if not a happy ever after Hollywood-style one.
It is a fictional account and not historically accurate but has all the good soap ingredients and really great acting even if some roles call for over-the-top panto performances.
Some beautiful people on screen mixing fine storytelling with copious amounts of fighting and fake blood.
Best bits: the character acting and tension, a tear-jerking, gripping saga
Worse bits: although lots of ‘star’ roles it was easy in some scenes to spot the extras. Wigs are terrible and costumes look cheap. Rickety, static sets are recycled too many times. Uninspiring countryside.
What you get from this is Koreans like to watch good old fashioned torture more than hot sex on screen and 14th century Chinese liked to drink tea, eat rice dumplings and disliked foreigners.
Overriding thought: does power always corrupt?
Watched it back-to-back over three days - bit of an endurance test, xx
