I am puzzled by the negative reviews. But I am thinking it may be a generational thing. We were just a little older than the two dumpster kids during the movie’s early 1960s time frame. So we thought the various goofs on the culture of the day were hilarious and in general just enjoyed the silly, fast-paced, bouncy tone. That said, some of the riffs were in marginal taste, including a sequence that satirizes January 6 (way too soon, IMHO). Overall, however, we found it a fun couple of hours…yet clearly not for everyone!

I was shattered (in a good way) by this movie when I saw it on the big screen and am looking forward to watching it again. Absolutely brilliant and I was profoundly disappointed that Amy Adam’s did not win the best actress Oscar for her performance, which I think she completely deserved. I have read the Ted Chiang story it was based on, and I think director Denis Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer did a wonderful job translating this strange and ingenious story to the screen. If you like thought-provoking, humanistic sci fi, this is not to be missed.

Not sure why this is getting such stellar reviews. Like an overlong and not particularly great episode of ‘Black Mirror.’ Will stick it out for one more week to see if a certain character is still alive, but unless it gets much more intense and interesting, I will probably just start reading the online recaps and spare myself the bleakness, cruelty, weird authoritarianism, and despair. I’ve got the news for that. 😞

Corny, derivative, implausible. Mobsters caught in a robbery (the ‘one last job’) trope) beat up cops on the street and then when a backup squad car pulls up, rather than run, they stand there and stick their hands up. And their wives are all somehow on the scene at that moment. All the dialogue is hackneyed, ham-handed exposition: ‘We can do this!’ etc. etc. A waste of three excellent actresses. Paid $2.99 to watch it on Amazon and it was still too much, bailed after 15 excruciating minutes.
