I generally don’t mind first person narratives, but switching between two of them got in the way of empathizing with either of them. I was mildly surprised at a couple of plot points, but some of the foreshadowing was really obvious. I don’t feel like there was any sort of clear-cut character to actually root for. It was more like watching a train wreck.

Love the series, loved the first movie, missed Omundson terribly, so I'm glad this movie was able to bring him back. I think that mixing in the attempt at what was really quite a serious story arc for Lassie just didn't blend as well with the usually plots/dialogue in the show. I kind of wish they could have gone one way or the other. I wouldn't have minded a more-serious-than-usual plot throughout. The overall plot was kind of confusing and it all felt a little "off". (Dick jokes? Since when?) But it's always great to see the cast back together -- this one was definitely a fan service movie. I will suggest at least watching it all the way through, as Lassie's last scene was really lovely.

I guess the way to "subvert" the superhero genre is not to let the characters explore dark and violent thoughts. It's to make them entirely thoughtless and reactionary. This plays more like a preteen revenge flick with sci-fi tendencies than a true dark take on Superman. Well, if the preteen in question is basically possessed by a spaceship but not for 12 years for some reason? I don't know. I was just looking for more depth.
