This was the first novel I’ve read by John Irving and it may be the last. The story was convoluted and pointless, with the ending extremely unsatisfying. After 400-plus pages, it was a royal waste of time.

A scoreless game in the fifth inning is boring enough, and yet three (why that many?) announcers are managing to take boredom to a new level. Split screen interviews with players in the dugout add no value, interest or excitement. “How has your role in the clubhouse changed?” is hardly riveting. Can’t wait for my local announcers to return!
