There is a vague resemblance to the actual story. The writers have changed characters' personalities to the point where basically only the names are the same. They've taken the depth of each character and distilled them into shells that don't hold up. While the show does have its moments, they've twisted the main story plot so badly, it's difficult to see that it's the same story. Places and events are completely out of order. Main characters have been introduced out of sync if they've even been brought into the story at all. At least one character who is present throughout the entire book series has been killed off in the first season. If you have never read the books, I can see that you might enjoy the show. But if you've read the books, there is little similarity.
