A high-tension chamber drama/road comedy fusion about 3 junkies trying to score on the hurried streets of LA. Written and acted by actual recovering addicts (one of whom died tragically of an overdose after the film’s release), the film injects tons of hilarity into its dark, realistic, drug-jargon-y subject matter, with plenty of laughs to be had for those who’ve “been there” and those who haven’t. Realistic and pulls no punches without sacrificing the comedic value of the increasingly loony, withdrawal-induced banter between our 3 heroes. Much of the dialogue is reminiscent of Tarantino’s older work, with memorable, quirky conversations taking place throughout. The finale underscores the undercurrent of opioid crisis-related social commentary the entire film builds to, more subtly in some scenes than others, That said, could be very triggering for some. Wouldn’t recommend to struggling addicts.
A solid 4/5. The film does everything it sets out to, but ultimately misses opportunities to use its subject matter and stellar performances to more deeply explore the issue.
