For the first 3 episodes, Camp Cretaceous lacked a lot of what made Jurassic Park what it is; the dialogue, the themes and even the action were definitely subpar and mediocre. Now, when I got to Episode 4, the story really picked up, and I felt like I was watching a mainline Jurassic World movie, which definitely makes the show 10x better than those first episodes.
I really enjoyed how the characters evolved throughout the episodes, but my favorite character arc from this show is Ben, played by Sean Gaimbrone. Ben was this show's 'outcast'. He wasn't really meant to be in Jurassic World. But at the penultimate episode, he really stepped up to the challenge and made himself a hero for the group, at the cost of his own life (he really isn't dead, but ya know what I mean)
In terms of characters, I loved Darius and Kenji's dynamic, and also liked how Brooklynn, played by Jenna Ortega, who at the beginning was a very 2d and flat stereotypical character, evolved into a more dynamic and grounded character that really contrasted with the others in the group.
Now, the best part about Camp Cretaceous is the integration of the preexisting Jurassic Park lore. I adored the small mentions of characters like Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler, alongside Claire Dearing. I loved the fact that they cross paths with Blue and the Indominus Rex, which really creates continuity with the events of Jurassic World. Also, there was a really great scene where Ben mentions the 'other park', which was a really good callback to the original Jurassic Park.
The one thing that made the show really good for me was Eddie, played by the fantastic James Arnold Taylor. When he mentioned 'the other guys', I knew that this show was going to be amazing, which was later proven by the reveal that Sammy was spying for Manteh Corp, a rival company. This corporate espionage subplot and Darius' father's subplot really sold the show for me, alongside those signature Jurassic Park action pieces.
The only thing I really didn't like was that 'the other guys' weren't BioSyn, but a completely new corporation called Manteh Corp. I don't understand why this even happened in the first place, but I guess it lines up with what Colin Trevorrow said about cloning technology going open-source in movie canon.
I adore this show. Although it's aimed for children, there are enough themes, action scenes, lore inclusions and character motivations that really sell the show for me.
5/5. Can't wait for Season 2.
