My rating is 6.5/10
After so much of speculation about Captain Marvel since Infinity War’s post credits scene, the movie was a partial letdown. While I expected an Earth-oriented story, the movie takes the watchers into the Kree-Skrull conflict without a moment to breathe. Jude Law, being a fabulous actor, deserved a bit more than just being a confused mentor/villain for Carol.
Ben Mendelsohn is menacing and convincing as Talos, the Skrull general and the backstory about his family was just okay. The tome of the movie is dull at best and dark and evil at worst. Brie Larson look the part of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, and the watchers can notice the impact he has on the scenes she is in. We can see a whole new side of Nick Fury, who turns out to be a cat-loving, jovial and tension free individual (at least in the 1990s).
I would like to give the first 20-30 mins of the movie a staggering 2/10 as random sequences are thrown at the audience with no clue or hint, while a lot more is understood and revealed in the final 45 mins. Ronan and Phil Coulson should obviously be given more screen time and they were lacklustre in the small parts they had to portray. Goose is a cat (Flerken to the Skrulls), who thoroughly deserved the screen time it got and there are a lot of surprises regarding Goose. But my personally favourite scene was incidentally the mid-credits scene where we see the remaining survivors of the Decimation (spoiler alert).
Stan Lee’s tribute was awesome and I better not reveal it to you now. There are a lot of references and Easter Eggs, but you would have to look really closely for them.
If you are a Marvel Fan (for real), then it is a must-watch but a slight disappointment after watching Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor Ragnarok....
If you are a casual movie watcher only here to enjoy, then I would recommend you to watch it without any stress or tension as Captain Marvel leaves you clueless at times.
