I taught the story of Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers to my 8th grade language arts students for many years. It showed the humanity of football and the incredible changes that Gale Sayers brought to the racial issues of the time. The script was read aloud by students and then the movie was seen. It truly had incredible cinematic film techniques that emphasized the emotions of both men. My students had little knowledge of professional football especially the dominance of the Chicago Bears and/or the Hall of Fame players that were represented on teams that opposed the Bears. It provided an opportunity to teach them lessons of where football can impact our country. I hope that upon Gale Sayers passing, must students will remember reading the story and watching the movie. I would encourage anyone who has not seen this movie to watch it now! It is historical in many ways we need to be reminded of today.
