Incredible set design, story telling, camera work, and cinematography. An extremely well done movie that stands out as the best thriller of the year. In my opinion this is a top 5 movie of 2019. In a year that had so many other fantastic films (1917, Joker, Parasite, etc...) this film held its own. While this is ultimately a cult story.. it is a unique take on a different kind of cult that has historical, Scandinavian, significance; yet is not taught about in American culture.
As much as I want to empathize with the male protagonist of this movie, he is just the worst... As a 23 year old heterosexual male, I found him very difficult to empathize with or even support whatsoever (does this guy have the largest eyes in the world or what? Dude's eyes look artificial lol). The actor performed well, don't get me wrong. This is more a knock on how the character was written into the story.
However, I understand that the part of the "bad boyfriend" was integral to the plot of the story.
Other than that, I loved the overall plot and Florence Pugh's performance was fantastic. As far as low budget films go, this is as good as it gets.
Ari aster has done it again.
