An absolute masterpiece of an album. This album and Elements are greatly overshadowed by Unquestionable Presence which don't get me wrong, it's a great album! But Jupiter is one of Atheist's best albums. Piece of time was a deathrash album with little jazz influence BUT was still very technical. Then, Unquestionable Presence came out which was absolutely game-changing. It brought the cosmic sci-fi aesthetics that Atheist was known for and included jazz-fusion elements and was even more technical than their previous work. After UP, Elements was released and IMO it's Atheist's least interesting album. It's a great album, don't get me wrong! But Elements went too far into jazz-fusion territory and sounded too bluesy, slow, and boring at times. Jupiter however, was radically different. It's a blend of Elements and Unquestionable Presence but taken to the extreme. It's probably Atheist's most technical work yet AND was incredibly entertaining. It's filled with inhumanely technical riffs and ethereal melodies. The opening track "sets the stage" (reference to the opening track's lyrics) for the rest of the album. The riffs themselves aren't bone-crushing heavy and that's not a bad thing! They sound melodic and meditative at times while at the same time being supremely technical. The final track is definitely my favorite riffs-wise, the verse riff is just stunning and the rhythmic chorus "First and second and third person!" followed by one of the best metal riffs I heard is the absolute pinnacle of Atheist. If you're into Atheist's earlier work or similar bands, give this album a go RIGHT NOW. It's basically a modernised classic 90s progdeath album and it's done incredibly well.
