Scenery was good. I can get past the fact it's NZ and not Montana, I'm a realist and understand the cost of production effects where you can afford to shoot it. Thought a lot of the camera shots were good... Does that mean it deserves awards? NO.
The whole failure is the script. This movie is why studios are so hard to sell on making a western, and I'm afraid 'The Power of the Dog' will leave a bad taste in their mouths for doing future westerns. The western genre isn't dead, the sheer amount of reviews and hype for this 'Dog' proves that, but come on... My question is why any studio exec would read this script and throw millions on the table to have it made. Solely on the director's name? That's incredibly stupid.
And why would these well known actors read that script and think it was going to do anything for their careers? Were they out of work, or lazy? "Oh, ya, I'm free next weekend and always wanted to see New Zealand. I only have 6 lines with 4 words each. I'll do it."
Only made it halfway through the thing before I asked my wife, "Had enough?" and she said, "Yes Please". I learned the rest of the story from reading spoiler alerts in these reviews, and I say "So what...."
A word about the animal cruelty in this film. COME ON! I thought we had evolved past that! (Maybe not in NZ?) Only serial killers want to see the kind of cruelty shown in this film (the demise of the rabbit). Yes, cattle are castrated in the real world. Do I want to see it portrayed for shock value, along with the horse being beaten, when I'm trying enjoy and get involved in a film? NO. Come on Netflix, you can do better! Spend your production money on something people can enjoy and get behind.
