Just finished watching the movie. Definitely worth seeing. Nothing particularly standout in terms of the MCU but I do think the emphasis of femanism was handled rather well. While there was a strong undercurrent of female empowerment throughout the film, you were never beaten over the head with it and the primary scenes containing such ideology felt organic and a part of the hero’s journey rather than moments that were inserted into the movie for the sole purpose of “girl power”. The chemistry between Brie Larson and Samuel l. Jackson is apparent from their first meeting on screen and in many ways the film plays as a “buddy-cop” flick, if one of the cops was a super powerful human/alien hybrid capable of destroying armies by herself. The comic sensibility is similar to Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor: Ragnorak with some of the best moments coming from instances like the slowness of 90s technology and a quite unexpected reaction by a feline named “Goose” (yes, as in Top Gun/wingman Goose”) which has the entire audience laughing. Overal I would give the movie 4/5 stars. The standouts being the Excellent acting, special effects and action, but, unlike last year’s Black Panther, this origin story is a little too formulaic to be counted among the best of the best that the MCU has to offer and that keeps it from getting the perfect 5 star rating.
tl;dr — Worth seeing regardless of who you are and if you’re a fan of the MCU, it’s a “can’t miss”.
