Underwhelming and often laborious to watch. Inspiration for characters and themes in Tolkien's works are only vaguely hinted at, aside from the vision of a black horseman, that is used again and again. J.R.R spends a good 30 mins of screen time, half submerged in a flooded bomb crater, surrounded by war dead, but no allusion to the Dead Marshes and the dead faces in the water is made; I know it's not "Tolkien in Love" but references to the experiences we've heard about that were key to concepts in the book would be nice. Alas.
