I was curious how similar "Midway" was going to be, compared to the 2001 movie "Pearl Harbor", which was more of a love story than a history lesson. As a history buff, I'm glad the movie gave the namesake battle some historical context by starting several years before the Pearl Harbor attack. The movie portrays how members of the militaries from both sides made statements years before war broke out between the US and Japan, which later came to unfortunate fruition. Personally, I lost a great uncle during World War II, who had been killed in an accident on the flight deck of the carrier "USS Bunker Hill" in the Pacific, so my interest in a movie about this theater of war was quite intense. I thought the photography of the film was beautiful and incredibly realistic despite the obvious usage of CGI during action scenes. I found the film to be rather thought provoking, as it caused you to consider the sacrifices that young people made, in my grandparents' generation, to save the world from tyranny and the ravages of fascism. Many, like my great uncle, never returned home, and many of those who did, suffered from physical and emotional injuries. Go see this movie and be inspired.
