I'm an Anne Tyler fan and have taught her books Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant and Ladder of Years in my college classes. I've read several others. This one seems formulaic, and the plot and most of the characters are not that well- developed. I expected the whole plot to be centered on the gunman but that went nowhere. The best things about the book are the characters of Willa, the Accidental grandmother and Cheryl, the child in charge of her life way too early.
