Constantly shifting morals and realistic examples of how life never works out as planned. The characters are appealing one minute and despicable the next. Never boring, though the frequent sex scenes were a bit too much, though that is likely an accurate description of French society. OBGYNs vaping in their examining room, lawyers vaping in the justice building, and when people undress, it is not just hinted at but they REALLY do so.
The underbelly of society and a strange mix of migrants/immigrants (legal and not so) reflect that current state of affairs 2020. A black criminal is shot by a scared newbie police officer and the neighborhood erupts in chaos with scenes reminiscent of the current chaos in the US, even though the episode in question was filmed 4-5 years ago.
Gypsy pick pockets in train stations were realistic. Happened to me in a Paris train station about 6 years ago. Not a good drama for attracting tourists.
