I didn't like it.
First of all, it is clear attempt to modernize medieval epoch - 50% of nobles are black or open gays, women are oppressed by men, etc. Yes, I get it, the filmmakers wanted apply for Oscar, so they had to.
But the filmmakers ultimately failed in their agenda and it is a bit funny and very disappointing.
They wanted show how powerful women struggle against men while making great achievements, but in fact they yanked all achievements from Elizabeth and granted it to the men surrounded her entire life. Seriously, when Elizabeth through tears admits that she doesn't have any real power, that she is forced to make choices, it automatically diminishes her tremendous role in history of England to be just puppet in hands of men.
At this moment I got just mad.
Queen Elizabeth 1 for me always was iconic example of dedicated and powerful person, who was not just greedy for power, but also leveraged this power to benefit her country more than any other english king. I have no doubt she encountered men's resistance big times. And handled it as the great queen. But this movie just takes it all from her in an miserable attempt to make her someone she never was - confused powerless woman full off regrets controlled by surrounded men.
I don't think this is the effect they wanted to make, but it is what they made being blinded with pursuing trending agenda.
