it starts with very first chapter--who was shooter (Hess?) and why did he shoot "right wing character"? the only thing I could connect this to story is bringing type of rifle; and why didn't ballistics connect those bullets to Sand killings? But the biggest flaw is that by end of book I STILL don't know WHY Hess hated Cooper enough to kill her? For me, I would have had Virgil/Lucas reassure Cooper that Hess would not last long in prison due to being child molester

while somewhat slow reading, but makes this book different is that there's a discussion section at end, like this book was intended for either school setting (doubtful due to genre) or book club

disappointed; not much noir in first half, difficult to read; second half better. some overwriting, not much plot or ending. there must be better writers in KC!

this poor mans "Miami Vice" has it's moments; they tried to capture some of the fashion vibe of MV, such as tropical colors on Estes, but padded shoulders? All the 60-70's big fin cars? Director/ photographer was absolutely a leg man, with all the lower-half closeups of legs walking, or leg shots during sex scenes (always same sequence). No chemistry with all the subsequent characters. And I missed Brill as Cap. Of course I wondered how a police Sgt could afford a modernistic 3 floor condo on the beach in a wealthy city like Palm Beach--but then Rita had many residences through 5 seasons. Sad ending to series.
