I was privileged to listen to the CNN's interview with the author yesterday on the book in question. The author gave a bird's eye view of the book's major arguments. I wish I could lay my hands on the book to study and dissect it with a view to assessing the potency of the author's position. I don't really believe yet that the west has lost it even though the US has been posting declining GDP while China seems to be growing its rapidly expanding economy and global influence. The fundamental structures and culture on which the extant global order is anchored are still western and would need more than just minor economic indices currently favourable to Asian and indeed China's ascendancy to effect a new global order. In addition, America is a global military hegemon, and is ever-ready to utilize that potent fire power to entrench her global standing regardless of the current economic policies which are promoting tendencies toward de-globalization.
However, Professor/ Ambassador Kishore Mahbubani's book is a welcome addition to the expanding body of knowledge on the prospects of China's ascendancy as a global hegemon to consolidate Asian civilization and project it to the pinnacle of world affairs in a post-western civilization world. But, that futuristic projection could take another century to come to fruition.
