Loved this type of music the first time around (30 years ago) and have enjoyed much of Moby’s evolving catalogue since, including the obvious blues sampling dance and synth pop phases. However, the recreation of his ‘Go‘ era in this record doesn’t quite cut it. I wish it did, but it doesn’t. The intention is pure - to create an emotionally sounding, string driven techno album featuring early 1990s rave sounds - perhaps to soundtrack the world falling apart in 2020. But compared to the exciting indie, neo-classical and electronic/fusion sounds of today - like The Comet Is Coming, Sault, Max Cooper, PBS for instance - this album makes the early 90s genre sound positively dull and cheesy, almost like daft dad disco music. There are some moments of uplifting/emotional trance strings that make one feel nostalgic, but unfortunately this is no Leftfield sounding retro fest. More akin to “E’s a good, e’s a good”.
