Although it is directed by one of the greatest filmmakers to live today doesn't mean necessarily that it is the worst film of all time but the word 'worst' is too strong, I would say his second or third weakest along with Taking Woodstock, Ang Lee's Hulk from 2003 is more character driven which is deals with Bruce Banner remembering his past life that involves his father who sees him as The Hulk in which he calls him as his son, it is more of a father-and-son or family drama rather than a traditional superhero in terms of its serious tone, no jokes, length and pacing, average direction and okay acting, etc.
There are some touching moments because Ang Lee's directing trademark is having a whole family group as main characters, the acting is not bad but they are trying in some scenes and the other, some of it makes little-to-no sense, the look on the title character looks too bright green and there is not a lot of detail, give credit to ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) who did the visuals FX and tried their hardest, Danny Elfman's score is not a failure, it is a good listen along with his other superhero music like Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man (2002) and overall it is not bad, it is not good, it is definitely a guilty pleasure trying to appreciate what this adaptation is trying to show. It is a memorable film in terms of Eric Bana's portrayal of the title character but he would have been more memorable if it would have been a good film. It is very compelling but there are a lot of flaws that is easily caught on-screen, it is very painful to sit through in terms of the structure and pacing, too long and the pacing could have been better.
I am a hardcore Hulk fan and I love the comics, the 70s T.V. series with Bill Bixby portrayed David Banner and Lou Ferrigno portrayed the Hulk, it is definitely a guilty pleasure for those who like this version and for those who hate this, do give this a re-visit and appreciate it as a generally underrated film.
