I have never been overly fond of Star Trek although I've enjoyed it in all its incarnations. However I've always appreciated it as being a show that has been forward looking and progressive in it's themes going back to its original form. I always wished it had been more exciting and action packed, which is why I liked DS9 the most.
Now comes ST Discovery. And I must say that Discovery is every bit as progressive and forward thinking in all of its themes mixed with a healthy dose of high paced drama. Add to that interesting characters with genuine character arcs where you see them challenged, fail, learn and grow. Frame that within exceptional CGI and VFX for a tV show and you've got a fantastic new incarnation of Star Trek that made Trek a permanent fixture on my calendar.
People hate in this show because it includes characters and themes that are "woke" and slander the show as an "sjw" piece, but those haters fail to realize that Gene Roddenbury was the OG SJW and Disco would make him smile.
