Now on Netflix, it’s been such a treat to discover a show willing to go wherever the creative wants. Episodes go both predictably in very different directions. Watching Meloni in the role is fun, and the reason he goes so far over the edge where we now discover him is pretty ballsy. But if someone is meant to exhibit such extreme, reprehensible behaviour then it makes sense an already morally-corrupt cop loses whatever compass he might have had based on what we glean in flashback.
Oswalt’s Happy! works just as well. It’s clear he’s having as much fun with the character as Meloni is with his.
Cinematography at times is inventive, and never really tiring. It maintains the energy and tone the show needs for it to work.
