This show started out as a wry, dark comedy, but by the end of the second season, it turned into something much deeper -- a sad, wrenching drama about how "hurt people hurt people," to coin a phrase, but with the redemption of some unexpectedly loving friendships. Really wonderful show, wish there were more like it.
