This was an incredible and refreshing movie that I think put so much thought into the characters and the immigrant Asian LGBTQ+ experience. There are also so many important themes about growing up closeted in a conservative community, as the child of non-English speaking immigrants, and more. All the characters were fully developed and I think all the bad reviews are completely missing the nuance that Wu is putting into the movie. The character development was completely fleshed out, but not explained completely outright by the characters themselves. It shows such an important moral about coming of age and finding your own path and self-discovery. As a gay Asian person who comes from an immigrant family, this was an extremely authentic and well thought out film, and it reminded me and my friends of what it was like growing up. This was such an amazing movie to watch and such a good step toward representation, something that I’ve never had growing up. Highly, highly recommend.
