I was expecting to be a little underwhelmed with the sequel, as the original is one of my most-loved movies of all time. So I chose a cheap cinema on a cheap Monday night to see it. As The movie began, I felt that my concerns were going to be realised, as everything seemed so lacklustre in the first few minutes - not the polished, practically-perfect look of the original.
But as soon as Mary Poppins floated down from the sky and set those iconic turned-out shoes on the ground, the movie really took off! I felt that it hit the perfect balance of whimsy and pathos: I actually got emotional at several points and found it genuinely uplifting. I loved the overall message of positivity in adversity and pulling together.
This sequel was never going to equal the depth of emotion that the original evoked for so many of us worldwide. However, it surpassed my expectations, with its story-line, it’s great songs - and it’s emotional depth - all realised to a higher level than I could have imagined.
