I’m rewatching CITT right now as it’s getting taken off Netflix end of September. I absolutely love this drama and for me, it’s always worth a rewatch.
Park Hae-jin is amazing. As an actor, he is top notch, natural and incredibly believable. He did an excellent job in the portrayal of Yoo Jung who is one of the most complex characters. Yoo Jung has a variety of traits and two distinct sides to his personality, one cold, dark and distant, the other sweet, warm and childlike. Park Hae-jin did his best with the script he was given and expressed Yoo Jung very well. He is the best Yoo Jung I could ever ask for.
There are a lot of negative reviews on here from those who dislike Yoo Jung’s character. I think it’s because they don’t really understand this character. It seems that the script, the dialogue writer and the director were to blame for that. Since Yoo Jung is a very complex character, and he rarely speaks up or expresses himself, without sufficient explanation of his past experiences and emotions, it’s very easy to misunderstand him. In order to help the viewers understand Yoo Jung’s character better, there should have been more scenes from his childhood or his past that adequately explain his personality and situations.
The second half of the drama is too focused on the second lead character, Baek In-ho. Please don’t get me wrong. I really like Seo Kang-joon, and I think He’s a talented actor. But there are way too many, lengthy, pointless scenes that mean absolutely nothing and contribute no depth to the plot or to other main characters. For instance, those piano-playing scenes. I mean, who cares about how many songs Baek In-ho practices for his piano contest? There are so many useless scenes and dialogues to the point where I fast forward through them every time I hear a piano melody or see In-ho’s face. I don’t really like when one particular character being forced down my throat. They shouldn't have overdone it. The drama title is “Cheese in the Trap,” isn’t it? So why didn’t they just focus on “the Cheese” and “the Trap”? I just don't get it at all.
Kim Go-eun has incredibly amazing acting skills. She was able to so naturally play Hong Seol. I absolutely love her.
The two main leads' chemistry was really good. There was real connection between them. I’m convinced the two of them are a couple and really like each other. I wish there were more scenes between Yoo Jung and Hong Seol that could explain more about their relationship and why they fell for each other. Unfortunately, they already used up all the air time with pointless scenes.
Indeed, Seol and Jung are alike in many ways. Their fear of rejection drives pretty much everything they do. They agree to things that they don’t want to do in order to maintain relationship with others. Both Seol and Jung become hyper-focused on any individual who seems to dislike or disapprove of them which leads to their dislike of each other in the first place. Their need to be liked and accepted by everyone around them indicates that they are struggling with larger problems that originated from their childhood.
They grew up in a home where they weren't made to feel valued and often felt invisible. Their parents are a type of parents who complain when they bring home a report card with all A’s and one B, and never appreciate them for who they are.
I can really feel them. It’s like the main theme of their lives is “No matter what you do, no matter how hard you try, you will never be good enough for your parents.” This is what Seol and Jung have in common.
