This game is pretty standard for RPG games, with much of the praise being doled out due to its mainstream appeal. It's environments are stunning, characters enjoyable (for a mainstream 2011 game - any one who has experience with indi rpg titles or old school adventures will find them lacking), radiant systems and ai routines astounding, and story entertaining to run through (I still haven't completed it - more on that later). What makes this game a 5/5 for me is Bethesda's super inspired modding community and the ever expanding market for fan-made projects. It's also the reason I've given this game a three ironically enough. This game's main strength is its moddability which Zenimax has tried to take advantage of by following a stupid trend that ended up dividing a once mostly united community of passionate creatives who only wanted to alter a game they were inspired by. Surprisingly enough, the mods are also why I haven't finished the main quest. I'm still working towards attaining the kind of hardware that will let me share my Dragonborn's quest to end Alduin, and maybe even expand on what was going on in Skyrim with some other important faction leaders at the time (You should really check out the live another life and unbound mods - they open up the game so much). Zenimax had so much moneymaking opportunity that they didn't see (they were too busy chasing the short term prospect of shoddy subscriptions [they wiser move would have been to invest in nexusmods and other modding sites, maybe even hiring out some staff to rate mods themselves thereby adding credibility to the modding scene and encouraging creatives to invest in working for them without the bethesda store internship program (I can already see gaming studios hiring from the modder pool or at least donating to the ones pouring their love into serious projects like Beyond Skyrim)]). Add to that the game constantly breaking skse with its updates to its store - and this 5/5 adventure becomes a three-3.75. I really appreciate the 64-bit upgrade for mods. Love, a modder.
