This is a unique idea that has you questioning what you would do in a similar situation.
The execution however, is AWFUL!
Viewers spend the first 75 minutes thinking it's all a dream (which is the worst thing a film can do). Then things get interesting. But now, there are only have 30 minutes to wrap it up, so the movie feels extremely rushed.
The movie title/description and trailer tell nothing about the movie, presumably to keep the twist. The problem is, THE PREMISE OF IT IS BASED ON THE TWIST! So, viewers spend the majority of the movie bored and confused. They should've set this movie out linearly.
**********SPOILER ALERT:**************
The concept is that modern day black people are being kidnapped and forced to be slaves for white people who are role playing as confederates in the 1800s.
The movie spends 40 minutes watching slaves, leading viewers to believe that it's just another slave movie (and not a very good one).
Then we snap over to a modern day career woman waking from a nightmare, leaving viewers believing the first 40 minutes were all a dream (worst movie trope ever).
Viewers then spend 45 more minutes watching her boring life and not understanding what's going on. Until she's kidnapped. Then we're back in the slavery days and start to see modern things like planes and realise, the first 40 minutes were NOT set in the 1800s ("omg, what a twist" viewers say sarcastically, however it's doesn't make up for the 75 minutes of pure boredom and confusion).
Now what? Well, queue the escape that we all knew was coming and give us some closure.
But no, we don't get closure, just a woman riding a horse through a park. Surely they could've made a clip of the world reacting? The role players being arrested? The kidnapped people being helped? News crews?? No, just a woman on a horse..
Gosh, as I'm writing this I've changed my rating from 4 to 2 stars.
The movie was definitely made to be watched again, BUT did they ever consider that it wasn't that good to watch in the first place?!
The first scene literally has modern day black people forced to be slaves and not a single one of them screams "get the F off me" or something that a modern day person would say when fighting back or being killed?
Overall, this movie tried too hard to deceive viewers and ended up making no sense.
