I wasn't overly enamored with the first movie, though the fairy tale with a twist was quite interesting and the idea of a fairy tale princess being pushed into the cold cruel world of the New York reality allowed for some comedic interactions and events.
In 'Disenchanted', I went into it by being intrigued with the notion of our fairy tale "princess" turning into a villain because she wished for the fairy tale life when - since the first movie - she had become a step mother.
Giselle's awareness of her mistake and needing to fix it, combined with her delighting in her new villainous role is funny and it also felt natural - Amy Adams did wonderful playing between sweet Giselle and wicked stepmother Giselle.
I enjoyed discovering some Easter eggs: Ray from 'The Princess and the Frog' lights up Pip's home, there's some salute to 'Cinderella', a vendor selling 'sugar, dates, and pistachio's' just like in 'Aladdin', and Indina Menzel salutes Elsa's 'Let if Go' - she was a delight .
I loved the costumes, I enjoyed the story, but I didn't care for the songs. The fact that most of them were happy, frilly, and whimsical makes sense for going over-the-top in fairy tale, they just weren't that interesting. However, we get a great duet between Wicked Stepmother and Evil Queen!
TLDR: This movie is well-worth a watch! Just not my favorite songs.
