I honestly have mixed feelings about the game. I won’t sit here and blatantly bash the game just to be selfishly harsh. Instead I’ll be constructive about my opinions. I’m enjoying the game yes. It has its fair share of flaws but I do like how different it is. The fact that you can customize your characters is a plus. However I feel as if the gameplay could have been adjusted to a point where the mechanics flowed properly with the whole game. The cool down system does take away from what we’re used to in past titles and forces you to think twice before lashing out an arsenal of bullets but I also like how you have to think a bit before unloaded your guns. Graphics mean nothing to me but that’s just my opinion, so long as the game runs and plays well and I think it does a fine job. Certainly not the best in the franchise but this entry isn’t as bad. I do appreciate the fact that Konami caters to couch co-op like most moderns games don’t. I also like how we get a lengthy campaign like no other contra game. It can get repetitive but the action is thrilling at times. I don’t like how you’re timed to beat the levels but there is incentive for doing so as for when you beat a level, there’s a ranking system plus the rewards of exp. for your weapons. The enemies can get bland and there are not many different types but it’s so satisfying when you take out a bunch especially when you dash through them. All in all do I think Konami can do better? Heck yes! But for what it’s worth, I’d say give the game a shot. Again, may not be the best and may not live up to its predecessors (contra 3, 4, my two favorites) but there’s a decent game to play and maybe enjoy. Hopefully this serves as a stepping stone for a grand sequel in the franchise.
