My husband put this movie on without me knowing what it was about. I almost had him turn it off because 90% of the movie, I had no idea what was going on. Then when the light came on and I realized what was really go on, I was chilled to the bone. This is a visually exquisite movie that awakens your senses with it’s opening scene. It then takes you on a roller coaster of emotions as it depicts the horrific depravity of slavery. When you feel like you want to turn the movie off because you are so sick to your stomach and feel you can’t swallow any more, the main character, Veronica, wakes up and we realize it was a dream. We get a reprieve as we watch her with her beautiful daughter and her husband living in a beautiful home, far away from the slave fields where the slaves are forced to remain silent during their torture. Veronica is not only beautiful, but amazingly intelligent, outspoken, and an activist for black rights. You are then trying to figure out who the crazy, angry white “Karen”is that seems to be taunting Veronica. Then after Veronica spends a night out with her crazy friends, the rug will be ripped out from underneath you, as Veronica is thrust back into her nightmare and again is lying beside her slaveowner in her slave quarters, trying to plan her a escape. This movie will get scarier and more chilling days after watching it, when you realize what you just watched. It was a dark masterpiece! A must see!
