The film is a lot better than the critics in the 70’s give it credit for. More than any other film it underlines why professional contact sports exist. It’s central character isn’t terribly smart, or worthwhile, or noble...but whose stubborn insistence on playing a stupid game he’s really good at corners him into a backwards, unintentional sort of nobility.
Norman Jewison does an excellent job of sucking you into the game, slowly bringing the realization of what modern contact sports really are, and who really profits.
