Interesting End But Very Slow And Some Loose Episodes in Between - 7.5/10
By the time Will's arc comes to a full, and Ye advises Saul about the secret of personal jokes, the series had picked up pace again. You get that Star Wars story type of good feeling in the last two episodes, which must've been why the original book became such a hit. But the problem lay in the episodes in the middle that I felt were just stretching, having repetitive conversations and boring dialogues for lengthy periods. And I believe the makers, more than just catering to the fun fiction genre that 3 body problem book really would have been, tried to make it a bigger, and far more serious science fiction than it actually is, with little time for real research and space for invention (original story constrictions I meant). Result? Until the 7th episode, almost all characters were prosaic. Their bond lifeless. It was like watching some weird wannabe scientists with curtains for capes, who doped too much to even emotionally acknowledge their so-called friends dying so seriously.
A bit too rushed, or maybe quick writing, I do not know. With more thoughtful scenes and dialogues, cutting down the duration of the whole web series to a 6/7-episode thingy, and better character dynamics with an authentic tone, rather than just trying to oversell it, I believe, would have made the show a banger. Like stranger things and star wars where you don't even worry about science. (But from a writer's pov, I can guess the horror when there is a lot of science involved in the storyline - guess 'not overexplaining' would have helped, with better character responses and attributes!) All this being said, there are scenes in the show that I loved a lot too - like the one where Saul meets Ye. Then, Saul and Will's last conversation. Though there was no bone to Cheng's credibility as a real scientist, or her feelings for Will - even though they painfully dedicated an entire episode to show Will's pain and his feelings for Cheng like it was too late to construct - what Cheng sees, after arriving late to see Will one last time was hitting. They were great scenes.
Altogether, I'd give the show a decent 7.5 for the storyline, and because I was entertained in the last two episodes. Also in the first few. But boy, have I not laughed a lot hearing 'Lord, Lord' and that guy Wade!!!
