Okay be prepared, I've got a lot of hate for this movie:
1. Amanda-
In the book, there was a girl named Amanda who was Millie's best friend. Amanda has a physical disability, but proved to herself that she is beautiful. She was cut out of this movie, therefore not inspiring girls who may have seen it and not read it. I was disgusted by this.
2. Ellen-
Ellen is tall. As a tall girl, this made me happy! However, in the movie, she is very small. It is not fun expecting Ellen to be taller than her boyfriend Tim and seeing him (in only one scene, no less) as a very tall boy while she is very short. It's not fun being the tall girl sometimes, people will make fun of you for the boys who are shorter than you even though you cant help that you're as tall as the average man. This was infuriating to see. Also, Ellen just doesn't come off as a good friend.
Hannah-
HANNAH IS A LESBIAN AND THE MOVIE DOES NOT MENTION THIS! ALL YOU SEE AS "PROOF" THAT SHES GAY IS THAT SHE DOESNT WEAR ANY DRESSES AND IF YOU LOOK CLOSELY, HER ESCORT IN THE END IS A WOMAN. THAT IS ALL!
Mitch-
I loved Mitch in the book! He was such a sweet guy! Here he is non existant, which is not very fun to see.
Millie-
Millie was one of my favorite characters! However, in the movie her spunk is shown only as she says the f word once, and it doesnt go into detail of her love life at all, which I feel is a very important part of her character.
Malik-
Once again, a character who is nonexistent. In the book, he is the Indian boy Millie asked out to a dance, and he was her escort to the pageant. In the movie, the most you see of him is when Millie grabs his arm as he is about to escort her, and he is white. Hmmm, something isnt right.
Bo-
Willowdean got mad at Bo because he didnt tell her that he would be going to the same school as her once the summer was over (a dumb reason to be mad if you ask me). However, in the movie all he does is kiss her and he has one (1) monolauge about how shes beautiful. Yeah, no thanks.
Rosie-
Willie's mom. She was so very different in the movie. Also, Will clipped her dress together in the back for the pageant, she didnt get a whole new one.
And finally!
Willowdean-
I was not a huge fan of her in the book, and she was one reason the book was a train wreck. However, in the movie she is worse. She is only mad at Bo because she is self conscious of her weight, which was a big problem. She is portrayed the whole time as a good person, but she is not. At least in the book she is portrayed more as a bad person. And Willowdean is absolutely horrible, in my opinion. I DO NOT LIKE HER. Everything she does to help her friends and her mom dont exist and she makes it clear that they are a burden to her. I hate it so much.
The book was terrible, but the movie was so much worse. At least the book had representation. Instead of keeping that representation, they cut it out completely and ruined all the hope for people who needed to see that representation. But it's fine. It isnt like we needed that representation or anything.
I would recommend not watching this movie. It was only bearable because of the drag queens, Dove Cameron, and Jennifer Aniston. Thank you and good night.
