Big fan of the game and series but this was just an awful adaptation, without spoiling the ending this movie isn't faithful and takes the movie in a direction that you probably wouldn't expect if you've played the game or any other DQ game for the matter.
The dialogue is poorly done, the english voice acting is quite weak in several scenes and there were times in this movie where I had to audibly sigh out loud because the story was ruined with how the movie was paced and written.
The building of characters is killed by the movies pace and style, the death of the main characters father felt emotionless because it was so rushed (It jump cuts to the very end of the resue after the prince gets kidnapped within I'd say 2 minutes the prince is kidnapped and papaz dies ) and early on that it honestly left me feeling disappointed instead of sad/wanting revenge on the villian, emotionally this movie is very lacking compared to the video game which is saying alot when a video game from the 90's can convey a mood and develop characters better then you can in a movie in 2019.
The start of the movie had me feeling uneasy because it looked like a cheap way to write out the first bit of the story without having to pay to animate it or write a cohesive plot to include it which was my initial thought which was later solidified by how awful the rest of the movie was.
This movie honestly should've have been 2 or 3 parts which would have allowed them to include the start and real ending as well as better include some of the parts that actually did make it into the movie, the dialogue should've been hammered out alot in terms of trying to not sound like they are just reading lines out of the video game directly, it doesn't work and made the movie cringey to watch, the laziness of the voice acting is also quite evident as well as the translation. There's a scene where there's a wanted poster with the monsters name on it and they are calling it something else entirely.
I really wanted to love this movie and probably went into it expecting alot more then it was capable of ever delivering considering it's a videogame movie but the love clearly wasn't there and was a painful experience, especially the plot twist at the end where I nearly turned the thing off.
The movies budget was spent on the wrong things is all I can really say, more should've been spent on writers and people that are actually capable of directing of a movie. It doesn't matter how nice a movie looks or if it looks like a disney one if the writing and plot have been hacked at by some butcher with a rusty hatchet instead of someone that cares.
