I think the only reason this movie is popular is by capitalizing on the first one. The story is flat and predictable. The music is basically one giant meme meant to appeal to 80's kids, without the depth of feeling the original had. The attempts to make viewers cry was artificial.
It's like they storyboarded a bunch of "wouldn't it be cool if..." scenarios, then loosely linked them together and slapped a soundtrack over the top.
Well, lots of people fell for it. I just wish they had done something with all of the potential for a good story.
