A.J. Liebling is a joy to read. He writes wonderfully of the characters of the 30's, 40.s and 50's an his descriptions of those he writes of are fully of humour and "bumfoolery".
In the "Jollity Building" he brings out wonderful stories of characters of the "down and outers" of the Depression era and their efforts to keep a nickle in their pockets.
In the "Sweet Science" he brings to life the boxing life which all its interesting fighters of the "fifties"who were on their way up or on their way down or just trying to exist, managers, trainers and all the devotees of the sweet science and the wonderful descriptions of boxing from two centuries back and fighters of the fifties.
His books are not "easily read", but they are full of great characters and many joys and sorrows of life in the boxing world and, if the reader pays attention to the prose, he will grow with the book and the author and let himself open to "interesting times"..
